Why SMEs should double-check AI insurance advice

Unlicensed online sources create a new risk at renewal time

Why SMEs should double-check AI insurance advice?w=400

The information on this website is general in nature and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation, or needs. Consider seeking personal advice from a licensed adviser before acting on any information.

Australian businesses are increasingly using AI tools to research products, shortlist providers and understand policy options.
That convenience now comes with a clear warning for small business owners: not every insurance answer surfaced by AI search is coming from a licensed, accountable or locally relevant source.

New industry research released on 21 July 2026 found that unlicensed websites were appearing in AI-generated insurance search results used by Australians. The concern is not simply that some information may be incomplete. It is that business owners could make decisions about public liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance, cyber insurance or business interruption insurance based on material that looks polished but has no verified Australian Financial Services Licence behind it.

For SMEs, the practical risk is significant. Insurance is not a generic purchase. A café, builder, consultant, online retailer and allied health provider can all face very different exposures, contract requirements, exclusions and claims triggers. A confident AI summary may be useful as a starting point, but it cannot reliably assess your turnover, occupation, subcontractor arrangements, lease obligations, client contracts or previous claims history.

ASIC has already cautioned Australians to sense-check AI-generated financial information and recognise that general-purpose tools can produce inaccurate or unsuitable suggestions. For business insurance, that means treating AI as a research assistant, not as an adviser. It may help you prepare questions, understand common policy types or compare terminology, but it should not be the final authority on what cover your business needs.

A safer process is to verify before acting. Check whether a provider is licensed or authorised, read the Product Disclosure Statement, confirm exclusions that affect your occupation, and make sure sums insured reflect current replacement costs and revenue exposure. If you are comparing options, focus on fit as well as price. The cheapest policy can become expensive if a claim is declined because the wrong risk was insured.

This also highlights the continuing value of licensed brokers and insurance specialists. A broker can help interpret policy wording, identify gaps across multiple policies and explain how claims may be handled in real scenarios. That human review is especially important where a business has complex contracts, staff, tools, stock, vehicles, cyber exposure or interruption risk.

The key takeaway is not to avoid digital tools. It is to use them wisely. AI can speed up research, but Australian SMEs should still rely on verified sources, licensed advice and policy documents before making business insurance decisions that could determine whether they recover after a loss.

I’ve used AI to compare public liability insurance wording, but yeah, I’d still want a licensed broker checking exclusions before signing anything.

Australia's mandatory ransomware payment reporting regime is now a practical compliance issue for many business owners, not just a technology concern. Under the national cyber security reforms, entities above the relevant annual turnover threshold must report certain ransomware and cyber extortion payments within a short statutory timeframe.
