Decline in Market Share for Australian Insurers' Business Packages

Macquarie Report Highlights Shift in Insurance Industry Dynamics

A recent analysis by Macquarie has revealed a significant decline in the domestic business package market share held by Australian insurers, dropping to approximately 48% in the fiscal year 2025 from nearly 67% a decade ago.

This trend indicates a shift in the insurance landscape, with increased competition and changing consumer preferences influencing market dynamics. The report also notes that only two out of nine insurers experienced growth in direct channel premiums over the past year, with expectations of acceleration in the coming fiscal years.

For SMEs, this evolving market presents both challenges and opportunities. On one hand, the increased competition may lead to more tailored and competitive insurance products. On the other hand, the proliferation of options can make it more complex for business owners to identify the most suitable coverage.

To navigate this changing environment, SMEs should consider conducting regular reviews of their insurance policies, comparing offerings from multiple providers, and consulting with insurance professionals to ensure their coverage aligns with their current business needs and risk profiles.

Fresh industry attention on disaster resilience is a timely reminder that Australian small and medium businesses cannot treat severe weather as an occasional inconvenience. Fresh industry updates on severe weather claims are a reminder that storm, flood and cyclone losses are no longer rare planning scenarios for Australian small and medium businesses. Claims linked to major weather systems affecting Queensland and New South Wales continue to move through insurer assessment, repair and settlement processes, with businesses facing familiar pressure points: damaged premises, interrupted trading, ruined stock, delayed repairs and uncertainty about what is actually covered. - read more

New ransomware reporting rules put SME cyber cover under scrutiny
12 Aug 2026: Paige Estritori
Australia's mandatory ransomware payment reporting regime is now a practical compliance issue for many business owners, not just a technology concern. Under the national cyber security reforms, entities above the relevant annual turnover threshold must report certain ransomware and cyber extortion payments within a short statutory timeframe. For SMEs operating close to, or above, that threshold, the change adds another layer to an already complex risk environment. - read more
